Caithness, the most northerly mainland county of Scotland, has a unique landscape character unlike any other part of the Highlands — flat flagstone country, clifftop castles, and the famous Pentland Firth tidal races that make it a global hotspot for marine renewable energy.
The Pentland Firth has some of the world's fastest tidal flows, making Caithness the global centre for marine tidal energy development. Wave and tidal energy companies have significant interests in the area, supported by EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre) based across the Firth in Orkney.
